Before You Join: Be sure you read the rules below. There is a short time limit per move for tournament games. If a player does not move on time, he or she forfeits the game. There is no vacation or absentee provision, but note the section below about national holidays.
Format: Each tournament offers most of the game types (chess, backgammon, etc.) that are available on ItsYourTurn.com. Within a tournament, each different game type has its own separate rounds and, in the end, its own champion.
When you join a tournament, you can sign up to play in as many different game types as you want to. Some game types are divided into different skill levels, such as Competitive Chess, Intermediate Chess, and Casual Chess. You can only sign up for one skill level for these game types.
You will have to play up to 8 games simultaneously for each type that you sign up for. For example, if you sign up for chess and backgammon, you could have a total of 16 games. Be sure that you do not sign up for more game types than you have time to play.
Tournaments are played over several rounds in a modified round-robin format. For the first round, all players of a given game type are randomly grouped into sections of about 4 or 5 players. You will play two games with each of the other players in the section for a total of 6 or 8 games. You are a different color in each of your two games against a single opponent. Games are scored as follows:
- 2 points for a win
- 1 point for a draw
- 0 points for a loss
The winner of a section is the person who has the highest average score per completed game. There may be a tie for winner. When all games in a round are completed, the winner(s) of each section advance to the next round where they are randomly grouped into new sections. The process repeats until there is a single section. The winner of that last section is the champion in that game type.
Time Limits on Moves: You have a time limit to make each move in a tournament game. In a Main tournament, you must make a move within 48 hours of when your opponent submitted his or her most recent move. In a Fast tournament, the limit is 28 hours. Extra time to move is given for weekends.
You should always be aware of the time limit before you enter a tournament. If you do not make your move within the time limit, you forfeit the game. The hours remaining to move in each game are listed on your game status page.
Holidays: No extra time is given for holidays unless you receive an explicit message from the Webmaster shortly before the holiday begins.
Start of New Rounds: The first round starts on the day after the signup deadline. Subsequent rounds usually start less than 1 business day after a winner is determined in every section of the current round. You are responsible for knowing when new tournament rounds start. If a new tournament round starts and you are in it, you will be notified with a private message on our site, and the games will appear on your game status page. Time limits on moves will be in effect immediately, so stay alert for these messages or check your game status page once a day. Remember, you are only advanced to a new round if you are a winner of your section in the previous round.
Check your Game Status: You are responsible for making your tournament moves within the time limits and for knowing when rounds start. Check your game status page at least once a day and make sure it is refreshed in your browser. Do not rely solely upon email notification to tell you when it is your turn to move. We do not send an email notification every time it is your turn. It is sent only once after each time you visit our site. Also, email can be lost or delayed.
Set Email Notification to 'Yes': You should set your email notification option on your profile to 'yes,' and make sure your email address entered there is valid. While we encourage you to check your game status page on your own, receiving email notifications will help you know when it is your turn and when new rounds have started.
Only One Userid per Player or Household: Each player or household on ItsYourTurn.com is allowed to enter only one userid in a single tournament and game type, even if both accounts are members. If a single player -- or separate players living together -- enter(s) more than one userid in a single tournament and game type (for example, 2 userids in the same chess tournament) then their resign tournament games may be resigned, and they may be barred them from future tournaments. If discovered later, any tournament victories where a player has entered 2 userids in the same tournament and gametype will be annulled.
Computer Software Assistance: You may not use computer software that tells you the best move to make. There is no prize money at stake in our tournaments, so you have no reason to cheat. However, you may consult reference books or a database of moves.
Limit on Signing Up for Tournament Games: If you are a member on ItsYourTurn.com, you can enter as many new tournaments as you want until you have 100 tournament games in progress. If you have 100 or more tournament games in progress, then you can not join any new tournaments.
If you are not a member of ItsYourTurn.com, here are limits on how many different game types (chess, checkers, backgammon, etc.) you can sign up for. Just because your tournament signup is accepted does not mean you will be entered in those tournaments.
The number of tournaments assigned to you depends on how many games you are playing at the time the tournament starts:
- 15+ games: no new tournament assigned
- 9-14 games: 1 new tournament
- 3-8 games: 2 new tournaments
- 0-2 games: 3 new tournaments
Our system decides which game types you are put in and which ones you are left out of. You do not have control over this. If you want to make sure you get into a particular tournament, then make sure you have enough free games when the tournament starts on Tuesday morning.
You will not be kept out of your advanced tournament rounds (round 2 or 3, for example). If you advance to the next round in any of your tournaments, then you will be put in those rounds when they start, even if you're already playing over 20 games.
Tournament Questions: If you have more questions about tournaments, see the tournament section of our frequently asked questions.
Tournament Games are Always Visible: While you may hide your non-tournament games so that only you and your opponent can view them, tournament games that are in progress or completed can always be seen by anyone.
These rules may change at any time: You are responsible for knowing the rules. Important changes will be announced on the News message board which is accessible under 'Talk' in the left-side menu column of our site.
The decisions of the tournament director are final.
